Chaplain Ken
Founder of the Mahch'an School of Buddhism in 1987
Ordination:
I am qualified as a self-ordained Buddhist Chaplain.
To be an ordained Buddhist priest or Chaplain in a religious society, such as a Zen monastery, you must meet all of the qualifications set forth for ordination by your superiors under the rules and regulations of that religious Temple.
Once you have left the temple and rejoined Society as an ordained Buddhist priest or Chaplain, all of your training is of no interest to your Sangha as your training was only put forth to satisfy your superiors.
Your training does, however, help you understand more about Buddhism, but this can also be acquired in many other ways through books, the internet, frequent retreats to local monasteries and local Buddhist groups over the course of 3 years. I have been a student of Buddhism since 1983.
I follow in the footsteps of the great Buddha and Bodhidharma himself who were also self-ordained, as were all the founders of the various sects of Buddhism. I wear my Buddhist robes to identify myself, my faith, and my teachings. The various sects of Buddhism have different types of robes. I wear my robes as the Buddha and Bodhidharma wore theirs. The Buddhist robes are worn to show poverty and disassociation of material goods as the robes are generally made out of old tattered retired fabrics stitched together as a sign of humility. The baldness of my head is an outward expression of my belief in non-self, no vanity, and a dedication to my Buddhist practice.
I follow the precepts and teachings of the Buddha, Bodhidharma, Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen master Alen Watts, a dedication to Buddhism, its Dharma teachings, the Sangha and were blessed by the Avalokiteshvara the day I received the spirit of the Lord, granting acceptance to my self ordination in 1983.
As a martial arts and self-defense practitioner since 1965 having studied Shotokan Karate, Taekwondo, Choi Lay Fut Gung Fu, Muay Thai, Benny Urquidez Kickboxing, Marshall Ho's Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong and having been a participant in hundreds of martial arts tournaments as well as a UFC Championship Belt Winner in 1994 and a Championship Belt Winner of the Muay Thai Amateur Championships in the San Fernando Valley in 1990, I feel very confident and qualified to teach, and grade for rank, students of the arts offered in Bodhidharma-Do at this Holy Eagle Peak Temple.
